India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

India is agriculture based country we are efficient to produce best quality grains, vegetables, fruits, milk & products to all parts of the world.but due to cost effecting Indians are unable to get best food product to a common man.Ex:daily an apple keeps away doctor, but apples are produced in Kashmir valley.in south India each apple costs Rs 20 to 30 which can"t afford by a common man,in spite we are exporting the products.like this so many products are exporting but not supplying to our indians.

This problem comes due to non availability of demand at that moment thus resulting in the need to store these goods .. which is the problem ... Now what we can do is give these vendors a bigger market.. by marketing their products globally through e-commerce portals like alibaba.com which make use of the current supply chain management and sell the products globally thus the whole problem may be resolved temporarily and if the farmer can get the money then he may at a later stage develop storage

SIR IT IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS OF OUR COUNTRY THAT A LOT OF FRUITS, VEGETABLES AND SPECIALLY GRAINS ARE SPOILED AFTER HARVEST AND DURING THE SUPPLY CHAIN . THIS PROBLEM IS SO BIG JUST OF BECAUSE OF SOME OLD LEAKAGES IN OUR POST-HARVEST SUPPLY CHAIN LIKE CONDITIONS FOR THE STORAGE WERE NOT AVAILABLE , THE GOODS WERE NOT CARRIED PROPERLY FROM THE FIELDS WHERE THEY WERE GROWN AND ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS THAT THE GOODS WERE NOT STORED PROPERLY YET THE CONDITIONS WERE GOOD FOR STORAGE

Part-2 ONCE PRICE BAND IS BREACHED, GOVT SHOULD SELL AT SUBSIDIZED RATES AT ITS OWN OUTLETS LIKE MOTHER DIARY, FPS SHOPS etc. FOR ILLUSTRATION, IN THE CASE OF POTATOES, FARMERS SHOULD GET A MINIMUM OF Rs.10/- PER Kg (OR COST OF PRODUCTION IF GREATER) & CONSUMERS SHOULD PAY ONLY Rs.20/- PER Kg (adding transportation costs, reasonable profit to retailers, storage etc). A LONG TERM SOLUTION IS TO DIRECTLY LINK FARMER PRODUCERS WITH THE CONSUMER PUBLIC & BYPASS THE MIDDLEMEN.

PART-1 THESE DAYS RETAIL PRICES OF VEG HAVE HIGHLY ESCALATED EVEN THOUGH WHOLESALE PRICES HAVE MARGINALLY INCREASED! THIS HAS ADVERSELY AFFECTED EVERYBODY & COMMON PEOPLE ARE HIT HARDEST! GOVT MUST CONTROL THIS SITUATION. VEGETABLES SALES SHOULD HAVE PRICE BAND --- WITH LOWEST PRICE THAT FARMERS SHOULD GET & HIGHEST PRICE END-CONSUMERS SHOULD PAY. THE BAND SHOULD BE PROTECTED BY THE GOVT AT ALL COSTS.

Sir, Simple measures such as solar protection roof and dry storage facilities will help. A robust cold chain ( run on PPP, with govt approved rates) for farm to market is key. At market level, there is need for more SAFAL/MOTHE DAIRY kind of outlets. Finally, at family level, there is need to buy only what is needed ( not in excess). This will require some robust IEC campaigns and school education programs.

Freezing and refrigerated trucks will be excellent too. Also if products are locally grown then food will be farm to table in no time.

Grocery stores which only sell whole foods that are locally grown and possibly grown without the use of synthetic chemicals. Genetically modified foods are handy when it comes to making food drought and pesticide resistant.
