India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

Construct FCI warehouse that is accessible to all farmers and that it is in a vicinity of 100 kms for the farmers to sell them to FCI if not sold in open market. All FCI godowns to be digitally connected so they can exchange the harvests between each other as per the need. This will ensure there is no scarcity or surplus of any fruit or vegitable in any part of INDIA. State transport buses or post office vehicles can be leveraged for transportation

There have been many and enough good suggestions in how we can reduce losses in supply chain but one thing that is very important is that the chain works on the basis of a solid infrastructural platform. A critical component of he platform is transport. One of the modes being road transport. If the road .. even today are not in good condition then any effort is completely useless !! I would like to bring into attention some of the roads esp national highways !!

The best way would be set up fast supply chains, connecting farmers directly to consumers using the farm-to-table concept. Typical Indian supply chains waste time and produce due to middlemen; moreover farmers often get extremely low prices. By connecting farmers to urban consumers, we can improve farmer income and provide fresh produce to cities. The gov can pioneer farmers markets in areas, as well as set up mobile collection vehicles and mini cold-storage facilities close to urban centers.

when a farmer is planting in 2 or 3 acres of land the production is less a farmer cannot go to market with very less food. There can be 2 solution for this problem. 1)Buying directly from the farms using mobile purchasing vehicles and cash on buy methode farmer will get money for fresh vegetable and fruits. 2)Allowing farmers to buy and keep more land like removing the restriction of 42 acres and making it to 100 acres, more land means more production.

Mai tho kehta hu ki Bhai agar Sabji aur fal ko saste mai becha jaye. aur jaha jitni supply hai waha karde but waha cold storage banana bahut zarrori hai. par cold storage area ke hisaab se bana hoga jaha equally aur timing mai supply ho jaye.. waise jitna aap cold storage mai rakh kar bijli ka daam badayenge usse behtar ye hoga ki fruits aur vegetable saste daam mai bikey..

This can only be achieved by building an end-to-end Cold Freight Warehousing Infrastructure from the field to the refrigerator. Collective marketing of produce through mandi's should also be proliferated.
