India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

chain should be made shorter! allow farmers to bring produce directly instead of middle men. at some places and for some products farmers should be allowed to directly sell their produce to consumers. waste is inevitable. at most, it can be reduced. an incentive for waste collection should be initiated. this biodegradable waste could be used for creating bio-gas, electricity and slurry. Slurry could be used back by farmer as manure thereby reducing dependence on fertilisers.

For regarding to farmer we must create proper cycle that farmer can sell his goods in proper market with the proper funding. we should give open market to farmer that he sell his goods in open market @ his proper costing. we gave them proper instruction so that he can give earn well & produce well. we should create a person channel for every village who gave instruction to farmers and every farmer should learn from that men and increase his production. using it we give proper job to people.

1) For Fruits, If the amount of loss is significant then there can be a tie up with the juice manufacturing industries which can produce organic juice and off course for that there should be machinery installed for manufacturing extracting the juice/ice cream/pulps. This also might help in reducing the cost of juice/ice cream/pulp in India Cold Storage units to be built taking into consideration the wastage.. e.g we can have mangoes in winter...:)

A radical new solution that's being used in china and also in US is to use a mist based multi-tier veggie growing farms close to the cities or places of consumption which will eliminate the transport completely... This will radically increase the veggie supply, reduce the transport and wastage and also allow exports. Aerofarms based on aeroponics is one such US effort.
