India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

Without talking politics at all, it is a mater of cocern that we have also failed to stand ground, as on the storage front, on the side of processing of fruit and vegetables. Despite the fact of recognising the importance of attending to the problem of as to how to avoid perishing of agricultural produce, having a separate Ministry of Food Processing, the goal is far, far away from accomplishment. RATHER, THERE IS NOT EVEN A GOOD START. IT CONCERNS FARMERS DIRECTLY BUT HARDLY ANY FARMER IS AWARE

Contd...The main concern of the Ministry of Food Processing at the Centre should have been to put into motion the wheel of reaching out to the farmers direct, to procure their produce by paying them the reasonable price and process the same to reach the consumer, again at a reasonable price. But not much is there as a net result. IT WOULD BE NO EXAGERATION TO SAY THAT WORKING OF MINISTRY OF FOOD PROCESEING AT THE CENTRE DOES NOT TOUCH MOST OF THOSE WHO ITS FUNCTIONING IS SUPPOSED TO ASSIST.

We can make big cold storage bins in Kashmir as it will not require any extra effort to get the temperatures down. Cold storage is important but these facilities require time, space and money which is their drawback, instead there can be fast train network like it is for coal to supply food from one corner to other relatively less costlier; direct interaction of govt. and farmers;

2nd option : allow big market chains like walmart, Target into the market. These guys know how to create backward linkages. They will also create a lot of cold storage infrastructure and make a lot of smart buying in the peak season so that they can offer the best price in the off season. Minimum work --> Optimized result.

Build an elaborate network of State sponsored Cold storages keeping in mind which state produces what. Ensure that a gov. agency is also buying from the market in the peak season and then releasing it in the off season at cost which recovers them buying cost + storage and transport costs + manpower. Let that agency work like a private firm and in case if it is not performing, employees should take the hit in their salaries. That will keep them sharp and on their toes.
