India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

1: every village should hold a raithu bazar which is meant to sell fruits and vegetables cultivated in that village.it gradually reduces the traelling expences to the farmer there by reducing the cost of fruits and vegetables.people benefits with the freshness.to reduce the cost and to reduce the problems of the farmer one head should be appointed. 2: government should buy them from farmers at supportive price and use in social welfare hostels and schools.

A detailed techno-economic study of the Unit comprising cost of productivity of men and machines marketing, realization, profitability and a long term agreement with workers to commit to the nursing programme are the basic requirements for successful nursing. Providing gas at at $9.80 for 3 months will not slve problems on long term. Involving experienced Bankers will be of great help. There are 2-3 retired Chairmen of Banks at Cochin and around who will be able to guide preparation of package

My views on Rehabilitation proposal of FACT, Cochin,Kerala; I saw a report in Newspapers that Hon.Prime Minister has agreed to consider the Rehablitation package submitted for nursing FACT,Kerala. It is good news.I wish to remind Hon.P.M’s advisers to keep in mind thefollowing: Though I have not seen the package I could say from my practical experience that any rehabilitation package will yield results/succeed ONLY if it is commercially viable and the owners are committed to nurse.

In order to reduce the losses acur by farmer the govt should take step and measure and control in the market by allowing the farmers to directly sell the goods through aid of the govt not the middlimen who always spoil the market of the farmers and in production also the govt should take strict step to see that no over production is produce but instead should study what is the consumption of the people. So that there will be a balance in production and consumption in all aspect

Post harvest losses are mainly because each farmer transports their own harvest singly and differently. Collective farming should be promoted. Farmers should be given employement by government and farmers should be indicated by government to raise crops as required by different areas. After collective farming, transportation of harvested crop should be done by goverment transport by taking various safety measures based on type of crop to reduce losses of crops in transportation and processing.

each market should have its own cold storage.the vehicles for transportation should be A/C vehicles.surplus vegetables should be dried up after chipping them to size and they can be used tomato could be crushed for the pulp and make pickles of the extra vegetables which is the oldest method .nice crates should be used for all vegetables and fruits.

Each village should be promoted to raise their own food processing plants. Instead of sending fruits, villages should send jams / pulp / juice, etc. This will have many good effects on socio-economic structure of our country.

The key to vegetable and fruit managment(perishables) is in predicting harvest-time and space relationship in relation to market requirements(including storage and processing facilities) and demand. An effective planning system has to incorporate real time market requirements across geographical areas and real time harvest predictions. Image processing of satellite images can be used to predict individual harvests. Market networking can predict market demands and market needs
