You Ministry of food processing is very small. Please amend mandi act with one line. it is not compulsory to bring any produce to mandi. Rather it is last resort. if farmer does not get best price directly, then he can bring produce to Mandi. mandi tax only to be paid if he brings it to Mandi. so it is his option/last resort rather than compulsion. Then cold chain will come automatically

To open local level Government procurement centers and scientific storage places at district level following quality package methods duly eliminating waste product there itself (can be used for bio-gas production for use in the centers.)
Proper procurement, selection, packaging and storage at local level will eliminate most of the wastage. All India marketing system with online support will ensure quality products to customers at affordable price and maintain food inflation near constant level.

Packaging of product is very important as most of the vegetables perish during transport can not be used. Cartoons / Plastic crates should be used more instead of plastic bags and polythene or jute baskets.

Sirji,
Part 1 /8: HARVEST LOSSES NEEDS TO BE TACKED IN THREE PRONGED WAYS - FRISTLY BY LOCATION OF LOCALISED COLD STORAGE , & SECONDLY & MOST IMPORTANTLY, BY WIDER & BETTER DISTRIBUTION MANAGEMENT & LASTLY, BY ENHANCING THE OVEREACH OF RURAL MARKETTING – the last two are inter related.
MyGov volunteers have already posted lots of very good suggestions on cold storage & hence, would like to devote this discussions on wider & better distribution management & Rural Marketing only.

Part 2/8: FOCUS ON NOT JUST CITY CENTRIC MARKET, BUT ALSO ON EMERGING RURBAN MARKET!
One way to reduce the losses of veg.& Fruits is to go for wider DISTRIBUTION MANAGEMENT WITH FOCUS ON EMERGING RURAL MARKETTING AS THE MAIN CONSUMER OF THE VEG. & FRUITS. Presently, market is basically city centric, which is certainly not a bad idea, but with more & more rural area turning urban, there’s a big market/potential , which is yet to be tapped fully.TAP THE RURAL MARKET TO REDUCE POST HARVEST LOSSES!

Part 3 /8 : STRENGTHEN THE RURAL MARKET
One of the best way to minimize the losses is to strengthen the rural market of Vegetables / Fruits – because, the reach & demography is huge!. Gone are the days, when we used to think that, RURAL FOLKS WILL BE HAPPY WITH ALOO & ONION …..NOTHING ELSE MATTERS TO THEM….Let’s COME OUT OF THIS MINDSET & REALISE THE HUGE RURAL POTENTIAL MARKETTING. RURAL FOLKS TOO NEED QUALITY MIX OF FRUITS & VEGETABLES!!

Part 4 / 8 : GO FOR WIDER 360DEG. DISTRIBUTION MANAGEMENT :-
When you’re at the fulcrum of a vegetable / fruits growing area , you may not get big cities / towns all around, but surely, there’s a big rural market 360 deg. around you! Once you’ve a market there, THE POST HARVEST LOSSES ARE AUTOMATICALLY MINIMISED & YET THE SAME TIME, BUSINESS /ECONOMY ALSO GROWS, IN PARTICULAR THE RURAL ECONOMY – WHERE INDIA LITERALLY LIVES !!

Part 5/8:LET’S STRENGTHEN SUPPLY CHAIN LINK WITH MORE LINKAGES !
If we try to analyze the supply chain of vegetable & fruits, we see that, most of the time, these are grown in the villages/areas located at the outskirts of the cities/towns etc.. & farmers/growers either bring these products2wholesale markets located at the cities/towns for direct sale or thru’ APMCs. Let’s hv MORE LINKAGES IN THIS SUPPLY CHAIN LINKS to strengthen supply&distribution chain management&REDUCE LOSSES IN D PROCESS!

Part 6/8; LET’S TRY TO DEVISE THE WAYS TO MINIMISE THE TRANSPORTATION COST!
From the wholesale markets, these items further gets distributed to nearby places / local markets & at times, back to the villages rural markets, since not all products are grown at one single place/ villages.
Main stumbling block in this supply chain is the “transportation cost”, which deters local entrepreneurs / veg.&fruit vendors from taking sufficient veg./ fruits for sale@their shop.

Part 7/8:COLLECTIVE TRANSPORTATION OF THE GOODS SD EASE THE LOAD
Due to exorbitant transportation cost, veg. vendors/growers will be content with min.trips of goods transport from wholesale market. So, Either through APMCs or thru’ local tie up, if collective transportation of goods is arranged, then cost towards transportation can be minimized, which can help the sellers to take/transport more veg.fruits, thus minimizing the waste. Buyers will also get more variety of products@reasonable cost.
