India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

Two pronged strategy may be adopted: reducing the number of links in the supply chain and having proper storage facilities.

Live commodities starts degrading moment they are harvested. Need to work on four points: 1) cold chain infrastructure including skills development of producers, transporters, processors 2) single window clearance to handle licenses / permissions, subsidy, financial issues 3) Networking opportunities with SAARC and African countries (biggest consumers) 4) Central digital tracking of cold chain parameters like temp, humidity..5) Use of world class technology and subsidy for their use only.

We have to create an agricultural crisis management team all over india. Again we should create a green cavalry so that young people can volunteer during the crisis situations. Encouragement should be given to students volunteering for the nation as grace-marks. Some reservations should be made available for the volunteers.

Modiji To reduce post harvest losses along with cold storage, preparation of natural food colours from fruits and vegetables, value added products like jams, jellies, pickles, chipps etc should be prepared.Provisions for exporting these products should be simplified and govt. agencies check and certify these products and export these products in time. Trained rural volunteers are used for the purpose.

Modiji In order to prevent synthetic colours in food we can produce natural food colours from fruits and vegetables. Products such as turmeric, edible green leaves, carrot, beetroot, grapes etc. can be used. This will reduce post harvest losses along with cold storage, increase employment and reduce adulteration in food thereby increase the health of India

First of all proper storage system should be made for vegetables. Iceboxes and refrigerators are tje the best to keep the moisture and food nutrient preseved and prevent growing of fungi and bacteria. Secondly, places where electricity is negligibly found can have system of solar refrigeration. Every village must have a storage place so that instead of the farmer going to the market each time and store all his stuff there only.Lastly there should be good maintainance and well governed storages
