India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

We also create separate railway route for only goods supply to make transportation of goods more faster then today and it will also help to avoid some time in passenger railways too.

Collection of unsold Vegetables & fruits can be started at every milk dairy booths which is already spread all over India. After collection, they can be transported to a central food processing unit that can be established at every taluk level. There it can segregated into different quality and wastage can go into biogas, rest can go into food processing industries/organic fertilizer units/chemical ind. To encourage organic farming, Govt can introduce higher returns for organic produces.

We should have big warehouses and cold storage across all the small cities and rural areas so that farmer can keep/store their fruit and vegetable for a time period. Currently the no of storage and warehouses are very less and the existing condition is very bad. We should have state of art architecture storage and warehouses across country including small villages. Also we should have direct collection centers in every villages as per requirement to have win-win situation for both govt & farmer

why do farmers need to sell the produce immediately? This urgent need arises from the lack of storage space. The govt. could license storages ( cold or as required depending on the type of produce - the agriculture officers should able to indicate what is needed) and provide land for this. A private entrepreneur could provide storage for rent and the farmer can then sell the produce when he feels the time is right. The facility is rented to the farmer and farmer owns the produce till sale!

Sir,One humble request to Create"MISCELLANEOUS GROUP". No doubt MyGov provide its members one stop platform to share views and ideas on issues of national importance but due to lack of just one more group under the head of "MISCELLANEOUS" the topics transcend all the groups due to their scope and importance become less effective. As members have no option to share views and ideas on all other different issues of social importance so they post their such views under the various irrelevant groups.

We need a strong commitment from the govt. with respect to involving private players in PPP mode for popularization of cheaper technologies on farm level storage of fruits and vegetables. There are number of such technologies already available like Zero energy cool chambers, Cool rickshaws, Cool crates etc which need to be popularized in largescale through different programmes on livelihood security.

Sir, All we need is infrastructure and motivation. Farmers don’t able to take risk on their own behalf so govt should cover it. short term -establish processing units in every region that can save time and minimize transportation cost. -"samuhik cold chain storage scheme " for making affordable cold chain to small mandies. - there should be fine for wastage therefor we must motivate traders to use cold chain storage…. Long term -A special vagetable train from every region.

The cause for this problem is indeed a long chain of sellers, transports between them. A small scale seller knows the worth of his vegetables and tries to protect them. So the mediators in between the farmers and sellers are the problem as they buy these in high quantities and don't worry about wastage and have poor storage facilities. Storage should be the job of these mediators and they should have proper facilities which is certified by a license only upon which they can buy vegetables.

1. Farmers should be taught nutrient management and harvesting indices of F & V. 2. The F & V production clusters should be identified. 3. Proper processing industries should be set-up in each cluster so as to reduce the time to reach to these units. 4. The farmers should be taught with natural drying and dehydration techniques to preserve F & V. 5. The overseas markets of dried/preserved F & V should be exploited so that the final produce can be exported & we can earn foreign exchange.
