The role of institutions of higher education in societal development is becoming increasing significant. In recent years, higher education has isolated itself from the society and there is a need to re-establish and strengthen higher education’s close linkages with the society. How can Universities foster social responsibility and engage in community outreach programmes. Sharing some working examples would also be a useful input.

SHEETAL , SRI MUKTSAR SAHIB The higher education is an opportunity for an individual to gain an extertise in a choosen area. The education should guide and motivate an individual to contribute to the society. Once an individual is gradudated he should not just build a cocoon of himself with his salary, comfort and luxury. The individal should have a target to involve in a social change, coming up with solutions like rural development, urban management, organic agricultural technologies.

Higher education can contribute to the developmental agenda by community outreach programmes that link the global to the local. Such programmes must be directed at involving the community in detailed study of the social, economic, linguistic, and physical environment that the University is located in. Awareness building outreach programmes dedicated at eradicating superstition and regressive social attitudes like casteism, communalism, and gender discrimination and violence.
