Pattern of GATE exam for IITs should be changed. Students should be segregated, according to their interests in PSU's or higher education. The recruitment procedure of PSU's are so time taking that students take admission in IIT's just for a degree sake and leave as soon as they get confirmation from PSU. In this way, seats in IIT are lying vacant and wasted. Also good quality research cant be assured. Hence norms and procedures should be changed. This is the need of the hour.

Performance of professors in teaching and contribution towards research should be monitored rigorously. Most professors just enjoy their "sarkaari job". More accountability of performance of prof. should be there. It should be seen that they continuously progress in research by setting up certain guidelines for them. Guidelines should be made such that research should be aimed at getting a good publication or patent, rather than mere getting a degree by students.

Professors and researchers from abroad should be encouraged to come to India and teach or take part in research in IIT's. This will lead to better research. More opportunities should be created for researchers in IITs to work part of their research in abroad, either in industry or any institution. More mobility of researchers should be encouraged to conduct research abroad (with funding facility) as everyone cannot afford education abroad.

1. Formation of research groups involving students and faculty at IITs to undertake industry projects or some other research problem will help to promote research in a better way. 2. Research just goes on a HIT AND TRIAL mode in IIT's. This attitude should be changed as it results mostly in unproductivity working in a directionless manner. STRUCTURED PHD programmes, as in Europe, should be encouraged, where research problem is well defined. this leads to more productivity,
