Ph.D. and research, now is a market commodity that depend on supply and demand.Forcing to obtain a Ph. D. degree for promotions and admissions as faculty members in colleges and organizations by statutory bodies like UGC, made the things worst for true research and innovation. Alternatives need to be thought of like delinking Teaching and research, still upgrading the knowledge of teachers by attending refresher courses.

Since I am an Electrical Engineer, I prefer to focus on my discipline. We have to promote the research activities in Wind energy conversion systems to the maximum extend. It is the only cheaper and non polluting source.More subsidy can be given to SolarPV+wind energy hybrid power generation, for house hold needs upto 3 KW rating. It will increase mass production of Wind PMSG's. So the investment cost will be reduced. Air conditioner's usage may be reduced to improve the stability of grids.

Universities should work with industries to generate new products and provide research in lieu of PhD sponshorship. This relation between industries and universities is thriving in UK (atleast). Why can't we replicate in India? I think... this needs to be given some thought.
