Shortlisted as one of the smart cities, Bhubaneswar today is a model of livability evident by the city’s stable growth rate in the recent decades. On the other hand, the city faces challenges that are negative consequences of urbanization faced by many cities. We now suffer from a growing threat to losing our open spaces to urban sprawl, increasing private vehicle ownership, and recently being ranked 25th among the 28 state capitals under the Swachh Bharat Mission.

The challenge now before us - in shaping the Bhubaneswar for the next generation - is to strategically leverage our strengths as we grow, while turning around the negatives. With your participation, the Bhubaneswar Smart City Proposal will provide solutions to ensure a sustainable, inclusive and resilient future for all its citizens. In order to succeed in this ambitious mission. WE need YOU!

We invite the residents of Bhubaneswar to share their views and thoughts on the most pressing challenges that the citizens face to turn Bhubaneswar into a Smart City?

Disposal of solid waste and inordinate delay at traffic junctions pose the most phenomenal challenges to Bhubaneswar turning in to a smart city.Providing a boost to upgrade the standard of living of slum dwellers and reducing the magnitude of open defecation will make Bhubaneswar to scale heights in the path of climbing to excellence.

Samir babu’s suggestion to reach out to NROs and encourage them to invest in startup companies in state is good one, but not viable at present due to certain basic facts. The NRIs look towards India for three main reasons. 1. They expect future economic growth in India and want to have a portion of the growth cake.

2. They take pride in being Indians for the cultural. Historical and religio-social leadership of India and Indians worldwide. They want to stick to their roots. 3. Most want their next generation to come back and settle in India as in Metros and a few forward cities the life is not very different.

So for NROs to invest in Odisha, 1. We have to show that it is going to be an economic hub, (for which the best opportunity available is in the tourism sector). 2. Our history and past achievements have to be highlighted to create pride in the new generation Odias. ( The CBSE, ICSE, all central service courses ignore Odishan History and the new generation are unaware of Great odias like Kapilendra Deva, Hambira, Todarmal, Panchasakha, Jayadeva, Kharavela, Tapusa and Bhallika etc.)

3. Our cities, especially the capital, Bhubaneswar has to be developed to match the best in the world as a smart city. Along with good transportation, communication, energy, water, sewerage networks, etc., tourism prospects with nightlife is a must to attract the next generation to come back.
