Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has been selected through a competitive process for SMART City Mission initiative of Government of India. In the next phase, Coimbatore city has to compete with 98 other cities from across the country to make it into the Top 20 cities which will be taken up for the first round of funding, for the financial year 2015-16.

Citizens and stakeholders of Coimbatore are requested to post their views and suggestions on how to make Coimbatore a Smart one. The citizens may organize their thoughts on the following topics

1. What should be the Vision of the Coimbatore
2. Strengths, areas of improvement & solutions across the following sectors

a. City Spatial Structure, Transportation and Green Spaces
b. Energy, Water, Waste Water and Environment
c. Housing, Health, Education, Security, Law and Order
d. Citizen Engagement, Smart Solutions and IT-led service delivery

Encourage a cycle sharing program. This will have a number of places were people can borrow and return the cycle. Limit the use of cars and other vehicles in this circuit. This includes shopping districts like cross cut road, D.B.Road, and and also in areas like Saravanampatti and Avinashi road. It can also be implemented in ace course road. Safety is important so there needs to be a way to separate the cycle lanes.

In heavily populated Shopping Districts like Crosscut Road and D.B.Road, encourage a low energy transportation system like Rickshaws that keep shuttling back and forth. People can get on and get off at any time. They can buy a universal ticket for lets say Rs.30 per day, and just swipe the card to get on and get off.

Adopt a Sister City. The mission of Sister Cities is to Connect Globally and Thrive Locally. Currently, Some cities in California are looking for a Sister City. It is very similar in Climate and has a lot of Industries. There could be some partnership between the two cities. We can also look for Sister Cities from other countries. Once this relationship is established the relationship it can help in the development.

Use Intelligent Transportation System Applications to improve operational efficiency , reduce greenhouse gas emissions and most importantly reduce accidents. Set up a Traffic Management Center. Using components like CCTC cameras, Dyamic Message Signs, GPS and RFID technologies. Conduct a survey to identify traffic bottlenecks, areas of high traffic incidents and violations. It is possible to use Short Range Communication Systems , using transmitters, radios and solar panels.

Lake beautification: There are around ten more tanks in the city. These can be planned, developed and maintained as theme based natural areas, which also provide a recreation zone for the denizens of the city. Natural walks (non tiled), angling and bird watching facilities etc. need to be basic amenities to be created here. Planting around the tank can be theme based like mangogrove, jackfruit orchard, medicinal plant garden etc. The planting as well as maintenance can be outsourced.
