Plastic pollution is not due to the use of plastics per se, but due to its disposal after use. Indiscriminate throwing off and disposal of plastic bottles at the point of usage, wherever we use, be it on the roads, at tourist sites, at homes, in offices, during large public events and gatherings, is the reason. We just throw it all around. These plastic bottles and waters find its way into drains, rivers, water bodies and finally into the seas. Indian citizens are always averse to following rules and SOPs, always resorting to shortcuts and convenience. Awareness on cleanliness, waste disposal, cleaning up our environment and surroundings somehow don’t appeal to us. Our mindset’s and attitudes have to change first before we can achieve the 3Rs.

While festival time like Diwali, Dasara, Sankranthi, Christmas etc we can try to consciously avoid the plastic items, plastic gifts etc. Many people buy plastic gifts as it is more attractive, less price. Probably we have to think this angel as well, more gift plastic free production, reducing price, availablity, local products etc can think of. This will reduce usage of seasonal plastic products usage.
