Varanasi, or Benaras, (also known as Kashi) is one of the oldest living cities in the world. Varanasi`s Prominence in Hindu mythology is virtually unrevealed. Varanasi Nagar Nigam is now participating in the second round of Smart City Challenge to enhance its Smart City Proposal prepared in Round 1. This exercise is being carried out under the Government of India’s flagship program for developing Smart Cities in India. Varanasi, also known for as the city of light, its culture and heritage, is now the most potential city in the state of Uttar Pradesh for being selected in the next round. As per the Guidelines of Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India, the preparation of Smart City Proposal is citizen centric and the successful implementation for any city would depend upon the responses/ suggestions given by its citizens.

Expectations from Citizen: Varanasi Nagar Nigam has detailed out the Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats of the city based on the Focus Group Discussions. Varanasi Nagar Nigam would request all the citizens to support Varanasi by giving their valuable suggestions/ feedback in strengthening the Smart City proposal for round 2.

The previous reason for not giving any views on Smart city Varanasi by Varanasi citizens is that they have made their mind that no one and nothing can be done beneficial for varanasi by current working culture of government machinary. People see that Nali construction work is done by thikedar but no officer come to site for verification. If public wants to say some thing regarding work going on like sewer cover on road is much below, or above no body listen it.

2.- Varanasi city can be renovated to Smart city in two phases like other old cities. a- Old heritage and cultural theme of Varanasi should be developed in one project, its boundary should be demarcated. It should be developed as project -HERITAGE. Its staff and worker and every thing should be not intermingled with new Varanasi Project. b- New Area of Varanasi should be developed under Project Smart Varanasi. Same way its staff workers etc should be separate than heritage project.

My suggestions: The Varanasi development authority,Nagar Maha Palika,PWD, Jalnigam etc officers should be made responsible for the work they have been allotted because the work going on these days depends on contractors only. They don;t bother about quality. Officer have not seen on any work place so that what ever work has been done so far has no quality of till date work. Only this strictness and answerable practice can make varanasi a smart city.

Varanasi needs a good city planning ,encroachment on roads,good sanitation and most important a good public transport system preferably metro underground may be set up.tourism industry may be grown by providing better amenities and most important safety to the tourists.while selecting the IPS officers the track record may be seen and strict officers having good background may be posted in such places keeping in view of the image of the country.Indian tourism service may launched on IAS pattern
