Public transport should be made specially-abled friendly

sir it is noticed some time that there are very few lucky differently abled persons who are very well taken care of by the someone. in some of cases these people are forced to lead to lead measurable and unattended life . so there should be district wise centers along with the helpline number where these people can be reported & local officers and leader should be responsible to ensure the proper care of all these people.

Wheelchair Accessible Low-Floor buses. This type of buses are very common here in Singapore and equipped with wheelchair ramps to enable easy access for passengers in wheelchairs. A specially-designated area, with a special backrest, low position handrails and a push button for signalling the intention to alight, are also installed to make commuting on public transport more comfortable for passengers in wheelchairs.

1. Cost of motorized wheel chairs to be brought down as they are well beyond affordability range so as to make them mobile without dependency.2. Reserve parking spaces, toilets for specially-abled people inclusive of spinal injury patients.3. Living costs of specialy-abled people including spinal injury patients are high due to medication and attendant requirements need to get exemption in medication costs as well as Income tax exemption.4. Employment opportunities for dignified living.

One of the most important aspect to help specially-abled citizens of our country is to develop civic codes such that all public buildings as well as the footpath on the roads must have ramps at the crossings. One the major challenge is that footpaths/side walks are missing from 90% of our roads even in urban areas. If we really want to make life easier for specially-abled citizens then laws should be made such that any new road development project in urban areas must have sidewalk/footpath.

1. Electronic / Painted signage for people with hearing disability. 2. All floors in buildings and platform numbers on Rly / Metro stations to have floor / platform number in Braille for visually challenged. 3. All railway platforms to have ramp on every Foot Over bridge stair case, used to cross over from one platform to other. This ramp is for use of people to take their wheeled luggage up & down the stair for those who can not lift the luggage due to back problems.

Transport facility: All the multi-storey buildings, shopping centres and government areas should have inclined pavement (avoid staircase problems by the wheelchairs). In Lifts and Railway Station, people should be appointed to provide service to the Specially Abled People. Bus should have in-built features to provide entry passage privileges to these people. Traffic rules including Pedestrian features should be provisioned. All website should have capabilities for visually handicapped persons.

I have personally been involved with developing environment control system based on gesture, voice, eye movement, brainwave based, touch based etc. Using these a person with disability (PwD) can operate computer, light, fan . AC, wheel chair etc. In addition they can operate simple electric machinery which enhances the employment opportunity (story in front page of Employment News : May 18, 2013).
