Electronic waste (e-waste) creates a global crisis due to environmental degradation. India, as a growing economy, is facing serious challenges in managing the volume of generated e-waste due to lack of environmental awareness and socio-economic issues. Major concern of e-waste management in India is its recycling undertaken by non-formal sector not adhering to health and environmental norms.

While e-waste poses a problem for the environment it is also a source of valuable resources and contains a number of precious metal and mineral resources, which are available in very limited quantities in nature.

While Ministry of Environment and Forests and Climate Change is involved in enacting laws, guidelines referring to e-waste and has formulated the E-Waste (Management and Handling) Rules, 2010 wrt safe handling of e-waste, Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) has addressed indigenous technology development through its R&D efforts to recycle e-waste and extract pressure resources following environment and health norms.

In this direction DeitY has initiated a demonstration plant to showcase its developed technology of processing printed circuit boards (PCB) to recover precious metals at Bangalore. DeitY also proposes to provide capital subsidy to authorized recyclers for processing e-waste similar to support available under the M-SIPS scheme of DeitY. Further recyclers using indigenous technology could be given additional advantage.

DeitY seeks views and suggestion to address the e-waste issues both in term of technology development as well as policy initiatives.

Comments should be received by 10th February, 2015.

This is a wonderful initiative which had been there on my mind for long. I have lots of defective mobile chargers, headphones, computer parts etc which are not worth repairing it. I am not alone here. Almost everyone seems to be having that issue. Question is where do I deposit them? One suggestion is that every electronic company outlet should have a facility to receive the e-waste. I have seen that Nokia use to have recycling e-waste, but I am not sure up to what level they are operating.

Since micro irrigation is a permanent solution for building drought resistant infrastructure there is a crying need to give top priorty to micro irrigation in the country.Government can make micro irrigation a national priority scheme and fully exploit the existing potential by integrating micro irrigation with major irrigation,tank/water harvesting reservoirs with micro irrigation and also evolving schemes where the small and marginal farmers as well as tribal farmers are fully addressed.

India has one of the largest areas under Micro irrigation in the world. There is a need to take a special drive to assess the performance of microirrigation with different crops and to formulate advanced schemes in terms of integration with digital weather stations as well as efficient fertigation units &automation of the systems. This will enhance agricultural productivaity appreciably with moderate investments. Also major irrigation projects must integrate with drip irrigation for CAD expansion.

CCE pattern seems not to be workable in India. Alternate effective pattern should come in force. There should be compulsory Board exams at 5, 8, 10 &12 class. Full syllabus of current class must be covered in Board exam (instead of selective chapters as in CCE). In this way kids will have thorough knowledge of the topics. In CCE pattern kids just mug up (ratta) instead of learning by heart. Kids are burdened with lengthy project works and other activities and don't have time for course study.

There is going to be heavy shortage of farm labours in the country in coming years-which will adversely impact agricultural productivity. It is highly pertinent that AgriculturalRobotics & automation are taken up on top priority by the IITs in collaboration with the ICAR/SAUs.The research and development can focus on cultivation practice automation, irrigation automation, harvesting as well as storage of agricultural produce. This can b included under MAKE IN INDIA movement in collaboration-JAPANetc

As the gov clinched the civil nuclear deal with the USA, let’s hope we can fulfil our future requirements properly especially in the energy sector. It is definitely another golden feather In gov’s cap same as in the case of food subsidies.
