India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

Connecting produces to the market /consumers should be the priority.Developing fast movement, primary processing and creating scientific storage can help reducing the losses. Creation of specialized hubs in production belts with rapid bulk transport facilty to distant markets is the weakest link.

The first and foremost task is to introduce the task that the farmer directly sells in the open market and to improve the logistics in such a way that the farmer can easily bring his produce in without much wastage.

Start building cold storage areas in all districts. This helps in employment of more people. Also one has to follow this pattern - fresh vegetables collection --> packaging --> storage --> distribution. Educate farmers more about handling the same.

Deepest penetration hamare desh me post offices ki hai. Har post office ko road, aur transport se joda jaye. Aisee vyavastha kee jaye, ki kisee bhi post office pe ek aaddmi koi bhi perishable agricultural product le ja ke jama kar sake. Post office se nearest market, aur aage bhi bheja ja sake. Is kaam se rojgar bhi badhegi.
