India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

The problem I could see lies in the farmers economic health. Most of the farmers are underpaid and do not own land. Some steps I could suggest is: 1) governments 50-50 partnership with farmer if he owns a land. 2) government job of farming.

Educating the farmers who are the actual producers to store product safely may come as a panacae to this problem.Making basic facilities avaliable such as connectivity to nearby cities should be given priority.Gram Panchayat must hold gram sabha on topic such as preserving agricultural products. They can also take initative to store products by making proper infrasturcture available by mutual understanding

In India we have very dis-organised structure for vegetable sales. I ask for starting an initiative to restructuring the current system into organised format.Starting from fresh vegetables collection --> packaging --> storage --> distribution. Firstly this would help in keeping the vegetables fresh secondly wastage can be reduced throughout the country, also the wastage would be only created at point of packing which could be accumulated and we can start fertilizer from this natural waste.

Best storage facilities of all good, perishable and non perishable stocks, available in every taluk, as per the local needs. Best supply chain management with proper transportation facilities includes chilled, frozen and dry. Cost to store the stock at those facilities should be least. But this need a huge investment, can be done better with PPP.

Can update the stock of Raw materials(Fruits & Vegetables) on a regulator website along with the location/vendor/warehouse this knowledge will help in transport the excess stock from one region to the location where it needs the most. Transportation price & availability may also be added to ace the demand & supply. Knowledge to people some times help in regulating & controlling the prices. - Keval Bipin Shah
