India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

# ALL FARMERS MUST GET AN ID NUMBER TO DEPOSIT HASSEL FREE THEIR PRODUCTS IN GOVERNMENT STORES . # GOVT MUST OPEN ITS STORAGE HOUSE AS MANY AS POSSIBLE,SOTHAT FARMERS MAY REACH DIRECTLY ON TIME TO SUBMIT PRODUCTS WITHOUT WASTING TIME ON MEDIATOR. # GOVT MUST PAY THE FIX RATE TO THEM AND MUST TRANFER FARMERS PROFIT IN THEIR BANK ACCOUNT. # ALL COLD DRINKS COMPANY MUST USE 50% FRUIT JUINCE IN STEAD OF 5%. # WE MUST UPLIFT EXPORT OF VEG+FRUITS. # NEED TO STRENGTHEN BRIBE FREE GOVT SUPPLY CHAIN.

Ensure and encourage the farmers to report their post-harvest crops quantity along with the amount they wish to sell. This can be recorded on daily basis by msg/phone. The farmers should also be able to report the soon to be wasted fruits/vegetables which they think that won't be able to sell. The panchayats can then arrange the transport of these to bigger mandis in nearby towns where they can be sold.

To stop wastage some measures like what should be the proper storage and transporting technique. Farmers need to be made aware about it. Identify deadline to sell before they get wasted, instead of waiting for getting correct price for long, find it better to give it to poor...bcoz along wid being one of thelargest producer we have a large no. of poor and under nourished people. Check hoarding of vegetables. And lastly as individual dont dump your fridge ie check your needs.

WE HAVE SEEN THAT TOMATOES SELL FOR PRICES RANGING FROM Rs.10-60/- PER KG AND ONIONS HAVE ALSO SOLD FOR PRICES RANGING Rs.15-70/- PER KG. THIS IS PRICE MANIPULATION BY SPECULATORS, AGENTS & RETAILERS. THIS HAS TO STOP. PRICE RANGE SHOULD BE AROUND Rs.15-30/- FOR THESE 2 VEGETABLES.

VEG & FRUIT PRICE-BAND NEED ENFORCEMENT FOR CHEAPER PRICES. WHEN BAND BREACHED, GOVT TO SELL AT SUBSIDIZED RATES AT MOTHER DIARY, FPS SHOPS etc. E.g. POTATOES -FARMERS SHOULD GET MINIMUM Rs.5-10/- PER Kg (i.e. PRODUCTION COST) & CONSUMERS NEED PAY Rs.15-20/- PER Kg ONLY TO RETAILERS (add transportation & reasonable profit to retailers). WHY SHOULD AGENTS & RETAILERS GET SO MUCH PROFIT? ONLY FARMERS DESERVE IT. LONG TERM SOLUTION IS TO DIRECTLY LINK FARMERS WITH CONSUMERS & BYPASS MIDDLEMEN.

I think, a special local train to transport vegetables shall be provided so that wastage will be reduced and would be better for regular passengers specially in west Bengal.
