India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

wastage is at many levels. at the producer level, in the supply chain, at the time of packaging and re-packaging and at the end user level. If the fruits and vegetables are processed and packaged at the place of producer itself a lot can be saved while in transit and at the user level

if the fruits and vegetables are supplied directly from the place of producer to the end selling point or end user a lot can be saved food supply chain just works as the connecting link . Packing and packaging at many levels can be saved.

Awarness is the only solution. Awarness of a farmer, suppliers and store keepers.Distribution can be done in 3tiers, 1. Village supplier (collection through village),2. Main Supplier farmer (collection through all Vill. Suppliers), 3. District Supplier Farmer (in each distt.) to Interstate distribution in reverse order 3,2,1.Govt.should engage Agriculture Service Men to educate people about pakaging and careful transportation.Store keepers should know the importance and value of their work.

1. State marketing Organizations and Cooperatives is encouraged to deploy refrigerated vans for purchase vegetables, friuits and poultry products directly from the producers in the village itself and transport to towns for delivery to retailers. It will give economic boost to small farmers/ poultry owners as problem of marketing and commission by middleman will not be an impediment. Landless farm workers be encouraged and given financial assistance to set up small poultry.

Promotion of agro-based industries on a large scale in the villages may help to some extent. For farmers forming such industries on a co-operative basis, a capital subsidy may be extended. For the products, a market chain may be facilitated.

Good step is to be taken. food park in each district to process the vegetables and fruits to be started it not only help the farmers, but by starting the processing units unemployment may also reduced. The other way is to start markets near by each villages so that limited materials could be brought and wastage will be reduced. The farmers transportation cost could be reduced and they get a maximum profit.

A chain of low cost cold storages should be set up in villages so that the farmers don't have to resort to distress sales. Medium and small scale food processing units should be set up by the pancayats in the villages. Similarly low ' cost 'cool' display cabinets should be developed by IITs and sold to the retail outlets on easy EMIs.
