India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

Most fruits and vegetables end up being used in the form of JUICE/PULP. So: 1) segregate fruits/vegetables with reference to quality . 2) Use crushing and filtering machines( One set in each village) to convert into JUICE , PULP, SEEDS, SKIN. 3)These can then be separately transported using freight. 4) Have a "MARKET RESEARCH" team to advice on possible new end products for food. This will increase profit margin, as we will sell products instead of raw materials. This also creates jobs.

Govt is more focused on infrastructure for storing them, whereas govt should focus more on creating faster delivery system by which produce reaches to the consumer in shortest possible time by creating dedicated transportation system and also add special coach for perishable produce in every train. We always oppose middle man for playing commercialy why not government make this middle man as authourised selling agents to create network with guidelines and regulation this will also create jobs

our country is so big and wast that we need micro food processing unit instead of big cold storage units.we should take help of BISAG for GIS Maping. we should include co operatives for this task in innovative way like "Federations of co operative allies with manufacturing companies.

I read today that Hon.P.M has instructed ALL ministries to use indigenous equipments .I suggest PMO may also consider to promote "KHADI" for Uniforms supplied by Govt at least partially.

If a farmer does not get the said cost from a merchant for his produce,at least he should sell it on his own instead of throwing it

Ignorance of ways and means as to how to get the best of produce, the farmer tends to fall prey to the foul means of the 'middle-men', who tend to do their 'bussiness' at the cost of 'not-so-smart' farmer. The farmer who transports his produce to the 'Mandi' at a cost, is SCARED INTO SELLING HIS PRODUCE, ESPECIALLY THE PERISHABLE ONE, AT A PRICE THAT GIVES PRACTICALLY 'NOTHING' TO HIM AS HE DOES NOT HAVE ACCESS TO ANY STORAGE FACILITY EVEN FOR A DAY. AT TIMES, THE FARMER DESTROYS HIS PRODUCE.

To take care of avoidance of perishing of agriculture produce, fruit and vegitables, the installation of SMALL UNITS AT CONVENIENT DISTANCES IS SOMETHING THAT SEEKS URGENT ATTENTION. More often than not, the farmer is not able to take his perishable produce to 'Mandi' as expeditiously as he should to get reasonable return, as also to avoid its getting decayed, reducing his return, in turn. This is owing to several factors including, at times, his inability to ARRANGE TRANSPORTATION.
