India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

Contd...It is imperative that the policies of the Government are framed in such a way that their implementation 'starts from the scratch', viz., in any case, the initial benificiaries should be intended to be the most vulnerable of the lot. THE HON'BLE PRIME MINISTER, SHRI NARENDRA MODI SAYS THAT HE INTENDS TO THINK AND ACT BIG FOR THE SMALL PEOPLE SO THAT SMALL PEOPLE ARE ABLE TO TOUCH THE BIG. That is the right approach the Government machinery, MUST ENDEAVOUR TO ADOPT IN SUCH MATTERS.

Without talking politics at all, it is a mater of cocern that we have also failed to stand ground, as on the storage front, on the side of processing of fruit and vegetables. Despite the fact of recognising the importance of attending to the problem of as to how to avoid perishing of agricultural produce, having a separate Ministry of Food Processing, the goal is far, far away from accomplishment. RATHER, THERE IS NOT EVEN A GOOD START. IT CONCERNS FARMERS DIRECTLY BUT HARDLY ANY FARMER IS AWARE

Food items are perishable so losses are bound to happen. I strongly feel that the effort and investment which will be required just to reduce the post-harvest losses by 1% or 2% will never be cost effective/beneficial. If the same investment is done towards promote farming-bring new land under cultivation will have better results. Its high time that Gov.tighten the screws of responsible departments and ensure scheme benefits reach to farmer without barriers. Note i am a farmer & never got suppor

Wonder, if it could be so said, the Ministry of Food Processing at the Centre must act as a shield against perishing of agricultural produce, especially, fruit and vegetables. IT IS A WRONG NOTION BY ANY MEANS TO HARP ON PREPARING BIG PLANS AND USE THE EXPERTISE IN THEIR IMPLEMENTATION. That benifits very few producers, merely those with mega produce. In any case, the producers with mega forms have POTENTIAL OF TURNING THINGS AROUND WHE IT COMES TO SAFE-GAURDING THEIR INTERESTS. MARGINALS

Contd...The main concern of the Ministry of Food Processing at the Centre should have been to put into motion the wheel of reaching out to the farmers direct, to procure their produce by paying them the reasonable price and process the same to reach the consumer, again at a reasonable price. But not much is there as a net result. IT WOULD BE NO EXAGERATION TO SAY THAT WORKING OF MINISTRY OF FOOD PROCESEING AT THE CENTRE DOES NOT TOUCH MOST OF THOSE WHO ITS FUNCTIONING IS SUPPOSED TO ASSIST.
