The potential of the cold chain is immense as most of the farmers lack storage facilities and access to other post harvest facilities. Owing to a change in lifestyle, the demand for fresh and safe fruits and vegetables is growing exponentially and hence the cold chain industry has a critical role to play.

Considering the global food security problems, reduction of post-harvest losses across the chain, especially in developing countries like India, is a crucial task which can be achieved by understanding the above constraints and addressing squarely the problems for promotion of cold chain industry. Post-harvest technology includes automated approaches for sorting, packing, and forwarding perishable crops into intermediate storage facilities before transporting in temperature-controlled containers

There should be food processing factory in area where more dominance of fruit and vegetable. For example in some area there is more tomato production occurs there is tomato sauce or tomato powder making factory should be there. Also in village each panchayat have there own truck. So that all the farmer from that village or from nearer village use it for transportation of there product to nearer market. This truck maintain by common farmer fund. There is also good railway transportation.

I am from Nagpur and in Nagpur there is one market called cotton market which is near to railway station. So farmer can use railways specially made for farmer. Also I suggest to prepare cold storage at such a market places. Some time raw fruit come to such a market, so there should be ripening room for such a product. I also watch on TV that one farmer who supply vegetable to mall sow the seeds in rows but timing of sowing in each row is delayed by one week. So no food spoil and affect the sup

Link all fruit and vegetable production farmers with packaging and processing units in Safal like cooperatives, public as well as private sector. All produce may be sorted, graded and properly packed. If it is not consumed fresh, it has to be put in cold stores, cured or dried. But linkages, cold chains and processing are essential for preservation. Like milk chilling centers, we may also have fruit and veg preservation centers at all block hqs. specializing in processing of one fruit or veg.

1. Do Market Survey for demand of food for every region of India. 2. Try to make most of the consumption for local market first by using community farming, coorinated farming, pre-buying of food grains by salers, effective use of crop insurance schemes, 3. Control the time of cultivation, amount of cultivation, schedule properly the harvesting periods to match demand patterns and distribution of income through crops. 4. Ensure the purchase quality and quantity by selecting seeds, pesticides, water control and other methods so that after harvest period the food is not rejected by bulk buyers. 5. Setup as many as small scale food processing units near the producers and enabling local market sale 6. Look for better supply-chain, storage and export opportunities and have special treatment for the same to avoid spoilage at every stage from crop selection to actual consumption. 7. Unfortunate spoilage - turn it into electricity production and have eco-system for getting atleast some benefits inspite of spoliage in some unfortunate events.

Encourage setting up of food processing units near the primary trading market for each fruit and vegetable e.g. tomato ketchup plants at Madanapalli. This will provide alternate use for overripe fruit and vegetables. Support can be land, low cost power and venture funding.

Contd...Creating ample number of storage facilities with touch of the art equipment which could be made use of by any and every producer just for the asking, would surely go a long way in avoiding to letting the agriculture produce, result of days and nights of toil and sweat, going to the dogs. THAT WOULD GO A LONG WAY IN SAVING THE FARMER OF FINANCIAL LOSES CROP AFTER CROP, AND THE COUNTRYMEN WOULD BE SAVED OF SHORTAGES OF THE ESSENTIAL EATABLES OF NUTRIOUS VALUE SO ESSENTIAL FOR HEALTH.
