India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

It is really something that calls for serious deliberations at all levels that that the precious agricutural produce of our country gets decayed and allowed to go waste when millions of our countrymen need them the most. The worst part of this sad episode is the decaying of all-precious fruit and vegetables. While their not getting reached the market hurt the farmers financially, THE DECAYING ADDS TO THE MAL- NUTRIONAL LEVEL IN THE COUNTRY, ESPECIALLY THAT IN CHILDREN,HERE TOO THE LOWER STRATA

Contd...This aspect of our social responsibility has been touched not a day too earlier. To one's mind it comes that among several reasons, some concerning seed and breed, soil-sampling and scientific implements, and other technological angles, this could be half solved if only there could be established ENOUGH HIGH-END STORAGE FACILITIES IN THE COUNTRY CLOSE TO THE VILLAGES AND THE MARKET PLACES, AND THAT TOO AT THE COST BEARABLE EVEN BY A MARGINAL PRODUCER. THAT WOULD BE A GOOD BEGINNING.

There is a simple solution. One National Level Agency should be formed as a Coordinator between farmers and Process Industries. This agency should have power to decide the Competitive price. and provide these Rates to Farmers directly by News Paper, Radio, F.M., etc. One Online website should be maintained to quote Price by Process Industries directly with contact No., to avoid high labour cost. No interfere of such agency should be allowed. Industry will collect goods directly from farmers.
