India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

At each district level, each block level and each panchayat level Cold storage should be created. It can be created public & Private partnership or by private or by Govt. These cold storage's can be rented to farmers, retailers etc. per day wise and areas wise. Many peoples can store fruits & vegetables and pay rent so that their loss can be avoided. Fruits & vegetables can become cheaper as well. Initially govt should identify the areas where production is high and slowly in other areas.

Create awareness through Panchayat and build Solar-powered refrigerated warehouses in each village, where each farmer has a 'locker' to store his crop for a period. Funds can be pooled from Kisan Vikash Patra scheme or by auctioning a piece of Panchayat land.

Farmers should form Government backed societies and they should market fruits and veggies. They will get high profit by avoiding middlemen. Different states should make contracts for the supply of products so that the price can also be controlled. There should be a form of direct marketing. From Farmer to the consumer.
