India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

5. Once proper source - destination is determined, we can integrate means that take care of logistics. Everything else, is precomputed before the harvest and as such the dealy is only due to pure logistcis constaints that can be mitigated by employing proper supply chain mechanisms and exemptions as suggested by others.

3. By performing data mining operations on this centralized data, we can derive different type of meaningful results. One such would be to route a particualr type of produce to a particualr area of demand thereby reducing the need to store produce post harvesting. 4. The price negotiation can also take place at a central place based on min-max asking price by farmers and min-max offered price by whole seller thereby reducing the involvement of brokers.

1. We must empower farmers to make use of technology like sensors, remote sensing, digital imaging etc to be able to grade the quality, quantity and persihable date of their produce around harvest time. 2. We must enable this data to be uploaded to a central/regional server that can track various metrics related to post/pre harvest produce and also the demand for the type and quality of produce in a region.

We need to work on this issue for two sides. 1. Storage and processing - As friuts and vegetable are seasonal produce thier production vary with time so we need to develope storage and processing units together as only processing or storage alone will not work. Processing units require consistence supply and storage facility will help in this. 2. Fast transportation - as these item as low self life they need special and quick transportation till market and processing/storage units.

indian railways needs to create a national network for procurement, one/two day storage and no-barriers rapid transportation of food items across the country, in which fresh fruits, vegetables, other food items can be directly sold by famers at rail-haats (marketing depot of existing railway station). after one/two day storage, it should be rapidly transported to any other rail-haat. the existing rail network, started by british for our exploitation, should now be used for farmers welfare.

Definitely more cold storage facilities would help. However another issues that costs farmers a big loss after harvest is the broker system at markey yards. After shifting the harvested grains to market yard, the farmer is at the mercy of the buyer or agent. They get cheated on the sales price. The farmer doesn't have the resources to take the grains back home and bring them back to market. We need to establish a system where the sales price of grain is fixed at farmers place than at the market.

THE FOLLOWING STEPS CAN BE ADOPTED TO REDUCE POST-HARVEST LOSSES : ( 1 ) MORE & MORE COLD CHAIN WAREHOUSES IN EACH VILLAGE. ( 2 ) THESE VEHICLES CAN BE GIVEN PREFERENCES IN CHECK-POSTS, etc. ( 3 ) JUST LIKE EXPORT PROCEDURES-where Excise Duty Officials, come, see, check & seal the consignment, CONCERNED SALES-TAX / RTO OFFICIALS CAN COME TO WAREHOUSE, INSPECT & SEAL THESE FRUITS / VEGETABLES. ( 4 ) THEN, THESE VEHICLES CAN BE GIVEN GREEN CHANNEL ENTRY / EXIT PERMITS. THESE VEHICLES NEED NOT WAIT IN CHECK-POSTS. Thanks, Shanmuganathan.B / 98948-66843 COIMBATORE ( TN ).

earlier people used to store grains in their houses.now no body stores in their houses.I saw in many vases in AP,harvested produce are trenched in rains. This was minimal in the past.I suggest to construct warehouses in every block/Mandal under the public private partnership. The present market yards are in sufficient to meet the challenge..Cold storages are to be constructed like warehouses and to reduce wastage.transportation, packaging are to be improved further.

here are the ideas: 1. every village have its own Warehouse.Total produce will come to here.village have full authority on the product. Govt alongwith villagers will fix price as per cost during this season.every Mandi give total sell qty of each item at 2100 hrs .Exact that much of qty of item will leave the warehouses next day for seasonal items and with -2% for non seasonal items.no farmer will go to Mandi. All Mandi will give computerized data everyday and govt will mobilse goods with help fa
