India is the World’s second largest producer of Fruits & Vegetables. However, the processing of perishable products in our country is very low, in comparison to the developed countries or developing countries like China, Brazil, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. One of the main constraints in the growth of processing of fruits & vegetables in the country is non-availability of modern and suitable infrastructure with efficient supply Chain. Consequently, there is very high level of wastage of the fruits & vegetables in the country resulting in the farmer not getting adequate remuneration for his yield. A study conducted by Central Institute of Post Harvesting Engineering Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, an ICAR institute, reveals that wastage in various agricultural crops in the country range from 6-18% and the highest loss has been shown in fruits and vegetables.

Ministry of Food processing Industries invites views/ suggestions for reduction of these losses.

Last date for sending your suggestions is 1st February 2015.

The way PM is promoting "Make in India" campaign for manufacturing sector,he should also take some initiatives to promote agricultural sector. Manufacturing & Agricultural sectors should work parallel to acheive expected development of our nation. Both these sectors should contribute equally in terms of GDP. Agriculture sector should not be sidelined

Promote establishment of cold storages/warehouses and food processing units in rural areas. Involve as many farmers as you can in this scheme. Concentrate on continious power supply in rural areas. Road infrastructure is must.

Avoidance of Rough handling of products and a secure network of transport between Farm lands to Storage units and to the Whole sale and Retail units should be well-linked by ways of Effective transport, storage and distribution protocol through computerised networking process, thereby analysing areas of delay/malfunction.

Currently, it is difficult to run any food processing units in rural areas as there is lack of reliable power supply! As stated before, processing machines consume a lot of power making it nonviable to run on expensive solar power. However, there are lots of damage if it is transported to cities or towns to be processed. So, In-situ processing or in nearby areas is needed to reduce wastages & also uplift the Rural Farmers so that they are stopped from committing suicide for various reasons.

PRESERVATION AND VALUE ADDITION TO FRUITS & VEGETABLES NEAREST TO THE SOURCE OF RAW MATERIALS ONLY CAN ENRICH FARMERS & RURAL ECONOMY. FOR THIS YOU NEED POWER TO RUN THE MACHINES FOR COLD STORAGE, PROCESSING & PACKAGING. NEED TO DEVELOP EFFICIENT MACHINES THAT CAN RUN ON BIO-GAS, BIO-MASS & SOLAR POWER. I SAW A CONVERTED SOLAR POWER-LOOM WHICH HAD 66% LESS POWER CONSUMPTION. WE NEED SIMILAR EQUIPMENT TO DO THESE THINGS FOR FRUITS & VEG PROCESSING.

1.Establish cold storage warehousing facilities near by the villages, where the crops growing more. 2.There should be an advanced logistic system to be developed in supply chain like apples and tomato transportation. 3.some reefer space /room to be provided for vegetable transportation in SLR of Indian railways long distance Super fast trains with reasonable tariff. 4. Establishment of Agricultural food Processing Units helps in great way. 5.cold storages at selling points for small hauckers.

Respected Prime Minister Sir, there should be food processing unit within 10 kms of the production area. The unit will be based on local production and demand of the nearby cities. A nodal Govt. agency will help in the centralised procurement. There should not be any middleman. Initial loan on the basis of production may be allowed. An agricultural insurance must be available.
