Water is a vital resource for life, and for the economy. Nowadays, one of the most serious challenges to solve and manage the water scarcity. With the depletion of water resources, the demand for quality water is increasing day by day. Water utilities are under pressure to provide good quality water, but are struggling with their outdated infrastructure at the same time. Furthermore, one of the major concerns of water utilities is the increasing wastage and pollution of water bodies caused due to metering errors, leaks, pipe bursts, and industrial waste. To manage all these issues, water utilities have to come up with smart water management solutions and techniques.

IoT may be used in potable water monitoring tools to monitor the quality of tap water in all government owned education institutes and public places. It should be applied in real-time detection of leakages and wastes of factories in rivers and other natural water bodies. It can also be used in monitoring of water level variations in rivers, dams and reservoirs, for proactive disaster management.

Smart water management is the combination of smart hardware, smart solutions, and smart services integrated together to minimize wastage and optimize the utilization. Intelligent use of information and analytics can be leveraged to deliver improved outcomes across the water management lifecycle.

With the help of this discussion platform we request you to share your valuable inputs on how IOT can be used in:

• Demand Forecasting and Allocation of water resources
• Water Quality Testing
• Infrastructure Management
• Improve Preparedness and Response to water management system

Your suggestions on the above topics will help us to make an integrated view and plan of action for Smart Water development by applying IoT and analytics.

Though we are a tropical country and receive good monsoon, we are facing big problem on the water resource. The climate change is one of the factors affecting monsoon resulting in draught in the big part of the country. Secondly, there is huge number packaged water manufacturing companies which pump and consume large amount of water. My suggestion is to make it compulsory to all hotels, restaurants, eating houses, dining halls etc. to install water purifiers in their establishments so that

First of all maximum rain water harvesting should be done....each & every park/ garden should be used immediately as there is no problem of structure etc. as in the case of buildings. In the large parks there should be ponds. The wastage of water should be stopped in residential areas, people keep overflowing the water tanks. Government should start the drives like organising the merathons....tree plantation should be done and people should be encourage to adopt some trees to water them.

Many people use RO for safe drinking water today, the waste water which is generated from RO is allowed to drain. It is clean water and can be used for floor cleaning, watering plants and other activities. This can save 10 litres of water every day for 4 people house and yearly 3600 litres.

#IoT: Many rivers & lakes are polluted. For their cleaning & protection we have to involve the stakeholders, besides the govt. effort. Water harvesting is a must.Wherever feasible check dams should be built in rivulets for irrigation. This will augment the ground water level, which is rapidly depleted. There has to be some regulation on ground water use. Wherever feasible, drip irrigation may be encouraged to conserve water. We should create an awareness among people against wastage of water.

#IoT: We are on the verge of a serious water crisis which has to be tackled on multiple front. First, rejuvenation of rivers. It has to start with protection of catchment areas. Long back, Tamiraparani river in TN was getting dry during some part of the year. But following declaration of Kalakkad- Mundanthurai as a national park & protection of ecology, this river has become perennial.Such success story has to be replicated elsewhere. Some rivers need desilting & strengthening of banks. Contd..

Presently all the dams are syllabification of rain water harvesting on a large social scale. Now we have to think of harnessing the flood waters which create damage and wasted on to sea during heavy rains. It is suggested that Over flow Weirs instead of flood control gates may b e installed in all dams and water diverted to constructed lowlevellevel landstorege nearness With in 5Km of dam fo use in future

Solar based distillation system to convert salt water to sweet water. Usable water being scarce in Areas close to the ocean, we could install a system where the solar heat evaporates water which is then collected in a hygienic tank, which can be supplied directly for drinking. Secondly, the installation is mechanical so lower on maintenance cost. #SmartWaterConversion #RenewableEnergySource
