The country is well endowed with many metallic and non-metallic mineral resources.  India is a leading player in respect of many non fuel minerals including, iron ore, bauxite, dolomite, lime stone and mica.  Mining sector (non-fuel) currently accounts for approx 0.5% of GDP.  For accelerated economic growth on sustainable basis, this sector has to grow at a much faster pace to secure   a higher percentage in the GDP.

Scientific, sustainable and transparent mining practices require well trained manpower.  Skill development not only enhances productivity and safety at work place, but more importantly, it prepares the manpower to adapt to the new state of art technologies. Currently this sector employs around 0.2 Million workforce which is estimated to grow to 0.3 Million in next 10 years.

All employees should require mandatary training for all employees by the agencies not controlled by the coal mines. For example, certification process for all by polytechnic colleges. This will increase partnership between industry and educational institutes. This will bring a collaborative, and competitive atmosphere in educational institute. This will break immoral, unethical and often unproductive relationships between employees and training centers within mining sector.

We should look for highly skilled engineers, technicians, machine makers and logistics guys who know about laying proper lines to transport these minerals. We should also be looking at environmental experts who can ensure once the mine is done the ecosystem is conserved and improved.

Mining should become highly automated, specially coal mining whether open pit or closed pit. People should not be allowed to work in inhumane conditions. Therefore the skill set we are looking for needs to change dramatically.

For the mentality of not doing physical work by educated to change, kids need to have a class of light physical work (besides pt classes). They should not feel ashamed to change bulbs, clean up muck, drill holes and use hammers etc. In Western countries children see their parents doing this, unfortunately in India middle class parents dont do any physical work themselves, for everything there is a maid, a plumber, a dhobi, an electrician

At all levels in schools kids should be exposed to various psychometric tests which tell them what they are best for. At the same time they should be exposed to what any work actually means and what are the growth areas, how much people earn with that job etc. Parents also need to be taken through this journey. Most of them are themselves ignorant about new career choices. We are a large country, we need all kinds of people, everyone should not aspire to be drs and engineers
