Three held so far It has been 41 days since the female trainee doctor was raped and killed on duty at RGKMCH on August 9. So far, the Kolkata Police have arrested one person in connection with the case. Two persons have been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation on charges of evidence tampering and delay in filing FIR.

The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF) took out a rally from the State Health Department headquarters (Swasthya Bhawan) to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office at the CGO Complex around 3 p.m. In the evening, thousands of people from different walks of life joined a 40-km-long relay torch rally from the city’s Hiland Park area to north Kolkata’s Shyambazar.

A day after junior doctors called off their ceasework agitation, healthcare workers and thousands of civil society protesters took to the streets of Kolkata on Friday (September 20, 2024) seeking justice for the doctor who was raped and killed at the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH) last month.

The search operations began with divers from the Navy and SDRF and the Uttara Kannada police participating in it. The dredger belonging to the Deep Dredger Company was brought onto the river along with a crane-mounted barge where it started dredging the four locations shown by Indian Navy divers and experts who pointed out to these locations using the state-of-the-art technology.

On the second day of the third phase of rescue operations at Shirur to look out for missing people, including Kerala truck driver Arjun, the rescue team on Saturday found parts of a heavy vehicle which was buried in the Gangavalli river. However, sources said it was a gas tanker’s parts, not Arjun’s truck.

The government is actively working towards resolving the issue, with ongoing discussions led by Health Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav and Special Chief Secretary MT Krishna Babu. Hari Kiran urged doctors to resume services urgently while assuring that the government remains open to dialogue on the reservation issue.

Health Commissioner C Hari Kiran highlighted the crucial role of PHC doctors in maintaining uninterrupted healthcare services during these challenging times. He acknowledged concerns over in-service reservations for postgraduate (PG) admissions.

The State government has called on Primary Health Centre (PHC) doctors to resume duties immediately, citing the ongoing public health crisis caused by excessive rains, floods, and the rise in seasonal diseases.

In a related development, junior doctors have resumed their duties in the emergency ward during regular hours and will assess their safety over the next week. A junior doctor stated, “We will again raise our demands if we find that our demands are not being met after a few days, and we will continue our protest for justice for the RG Kar victim.”

Dr Biswas was interrogated for eight hours, while the CBI continues to question Dr De. Sources within the CBI indicated that vital clues regarding the illegal transfer and posting of various doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have emerged from their testimonies. The agency is now searching for additional members connected to the medical scam racket.
